most eyewear professionals in my area use rhinoceros to model and prototype. Accurate, organic modeling just got easier.

For designers who need to explore organic shapes quickly, SubD is a new geometry type that can create editable, highly accurate shapes. In my opinion? even a file and a piece of acetate can do the trick to design you glasses. what is the production method that you have in mind? want some colorful and elegant acetate? some thin metal? wanna play around with sls 3d printing and innovative materials? keep that in mind. if they look cool but uncomfortable or don’t protect from sunlight they are almost useless. Keep in mind that, even if you want to do some sunglasses, you have loads of constrains from the shape of the head that you have to respect. you have to design the slots for the hinges, carve the slot for the lenses (which have a very particular shape) I think that subdiv is superb in creating wonderful surfaces but the fun part ends there.
I’ve only made a pair of glasses in my life so don’t take my advices as an expert but as a folk who were in your same situation.
